Vikings - Are they just Barbarians?

We are studying Vikings in 3B. We started by brainstorming what we know about Vikings!
Things 3B "Know" about Vikings:
-They are a type of warrior
-They have horns on their helmut
-They sail on ships
-They have axes
-Vikings are small
-They fight with other things
-They kill
-They sail the seas
-They are extinct
-They were not smart

Things we wonder about Vikings:
-Are they ferocious?
-Are they people who have wars?
-I wonder when they existed?
-I wonder if they have big and sharp teeth?
-When did they go extinct?
-How did they go extinct?
-Did they live on beaches and ships?
-Did they live on lakes?
-I wonder how they lived back then?
-Are they British?

Things we have already learned about Vikings?
-Vikings live in longhouses
-Vikings raided other villages to survive
-Vikings land was hard to farm, so they had to go and claim other land
-Vikings traveled Europe and as far as North America
-They originated in Sweden, Norway and Denmark
-Vikings turned into civilized citizens (they did not go extinct)
-They were shrewd traders, excellent navigators, shipbuilders and craftsmen
-They were also farmers, blacksmiths and jewelers (they believed that the Thor's Hammer Necklace gave them luck)
-They were great storytellers
-They loved gold, diamonds and silver

  2. We have really enjoyed learning about Vikings and how they lived. We learned a lot about their ships. The ships they built had serpents on the front of them. They did this to scare people! What are you learning about? Are you learning about Vikings too?

  3. I really like the history of Vikings. Did you know that Vikings were the first people from Europe to visit North America? They landed on the northern tip of Newfoundland at a place now called L'anse Aux Meadows nearly 1000 years ago!
